Sulley Muntari slams Ghana Premier League as “a mess”

The 40-year-old, who started his professional journey with Liberty Professionals in 2000, returned to the domestic league in the 2021/22 season, joining Hearts of Oak.

During his brief stint, Muntari helped the club secure the President’s Cup and the MTN FA Cup before opting not to renew his contract.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, the former AC Milan and Inter Milan star expressed disappointment over the league’s state.

“The league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league,” he remarked.

Muntari highlighted substandard facilities, including poor hygiene in changing rooms, as a key issue.

“The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. It’s not just one team—everybody,” he noted.

The Premier League currently operates without a headline sponsor or broadcast rights holder, further compounding its challenges.

Muntari, who enjoyed a decorated career abroad with clubs like Portsmouth, Sunderland, and Inter Milan, was instrumental in Ghana’s World Cup campaigns in 2006, 2010, and 2014.
