Asante Kotoko part ways with Nigerian forward Fernando Bassey after unimpressive campaign

Asante Kotoko SC have officially parted ways with Nigerian forward Fernando Wisdom Bassey following a disappointing stint in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League.

Signed on a free transfer from Sporting Lagos in August 2024, Bassey arrived with high expectations and the backing of a three-year contract that was meant to keep him at the club until 2027.

The 22-year-old, who was introduced as a versatile midfielder and forward, even inherited the symbolic number seven jersey from the departing Bernard Somuah.

However, despite featuring in 16 league matches, Bassey managed to score only one goal, failing to live up to the promise that surrounded his arrival.

His performances throughout the season lacked the consistency and attacking sharpness Kotoko needed, especially during key moments in their campaign.

Sources close to the club’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) reveal that Kotoko had hoped the Nigerian would eventually find his rhythm after a full pre-season under his belt.

However, with the club now preparing for the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup following their Ghana FA Cup victory, a decision was made to part ways and reallocate resources toward more proven attacking options.

Bassey’s departure forms part of a broader reshuffle, with the club releasing several players deemed surplus to requirements as they seek to build a more competitive squad for both domestic and continental success.

While his time in Kumasi may not have yielded the desired results, the young forward still has age and potential on his side, and will be looking for a fresh start elsewhere to reignite his career.
