ECG disconnect Accra Sports Stadium from national grid over Ghc400,000 debt
The Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana has had its electricity supply disconnected by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) due to an outstanding debt of GH¢400,000 owed to the power distributor.
This action was taken on Monday evening, while workers were preparing the facility for Friday’s Paris 2024 Olympic football qualifier match between Zambia’s women’s national team and Ghana’s Black Queens.
This is not the first time that ECG has disconnected power to the stadium over unpaid bills. In March 2022, the National Task Force of ECG also cut off power supply to the stadium due to a debt of GH¢508,000.
Similar issues have affected other facilities under the management of the National Sports Authority (NSA). For example, in April 2023, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) disconnected power to the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale due to a debt of GH¢466,000.
Despite the current situation, the Accra Sports Stadium is scheduled to host all of the men’s football matches at the 2023 African Games, which are set to begin on March 8. Additionally, the stadium will also host two other events, namely; sambo and wrestling.
