The University for Development Studies (UDS) has held its April 2026 Congregation Ceremony, marking a significant milestone in its mission to train development-oriented graduates while reflecting on the institution’s progress and future direction.

Addressing the gathering, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan disclosed that a total of 957 students graduated, including 416 postgraduates made up of 21 PhDs, 333 Master’s degrees, and 62 Postgraduate Diplomas.

He noted that a substantial number—541 graduates—were from Nursing and Midwifery programmes, underscoring UDS’s strong contribution to Ghana’s healthcare sector.

Prof. Al-Hassan described the congregation not merely as a ceremonial event, but as “a powerful moment of transformation” for graduates transitioning into new phases of their lives. He emphasized that success is rooted in dedication, discipline, and determination.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the university’s achievements, including the provision of financial support to students and progress in advanced education and research, as evidenced by the increasing number of master’s and doctoral graduates.

He stressed that the achievements recorded go beyond statistics, representing stories of resilience and sacrifice, and urged graduates to see themselves as agents of transformation in society.

Prof. Al-Hassan also pointed to the university’s academic strength across diverse fields such as agriculture, environmental studies, physical sciences, communication, education, health sciences, and business.

Over the past year, he said, UDS has made significant strides in research, teaching, global partnerships, and infrastructure development. A notable highlight was the university’s victory at the 2025 FISU University World Cup, making it the first African institution to achieve this feat.

He expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their continued support and encouraged graduates to uphold values of integrity, service, and innovation as they step into a world filled with both challenges and opportunities.

The Vice-Chancellor concluded by reaffirming the university’s commitment to growth and its vision of becoming a globally competitive yet locally relevant institution.

Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister commended UDS for its contribution to national development and academic excellence.

Mr John also lauded ongoing infrastructural expansion at the Tamale campus and said the newly commissioned facilities would enhance learning, research, and service delivery.

He assured the university of government’s continued support to improve infrastructure in educational institutions to expand access to quality higher education.

He urged the graduands to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship and take advantage of opportunities under government initiatives such as the 24-hour economy policy.

He encouraged them to uphold values of integrity, service, and community engagement as they stepped into the next phase of their lives.
