Make Sanitation A Collective Responsibility – Hajia Fati Urges Ghanaians

Hajia Fati Sibdow Baba, the Deputy Regional Environmental Health Officer has appealed to Ghanaian citizens to confront issues of sanitation as a collective responsibility.

In a statement she noted that every citizen had an obligation towards the environment and should never think this obligation belongs to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies alone.

Urging the populace to emulate the sanitation practice of the cat, she noted that people must learn to bury their mess whenever they generate them.

She made the call during a stakeholder engagement on environmental care organized by the Church of Pentecost in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana aimed at educating the populace on sanitation related situations.

The Area secretary of the church of Pentecost, Rev Bernard Aziz Mohammed Abogorago, noted that the nationwide campaign dubbed “Environmental Care Campaign” is meant to rid Ghana of filth.

He further added that it is as well aimed at reducing if not to eradicating completely ailments caused by unsanitary conditions.

In his presentation Mr. Martin Ahorlu, Director Waste Management at the Tamale metropolitan assembly said it was imperative for every citizen to change their attitudes toward waste disposal and team up with the assemblies to manage waste effectively.

According to him though the assemblies were the lawful institutions mandated by the constitution to spearhead the issues of sanitation at the grassroots levels, a dedicated court must be set up solely for the fight against improper sanitary conditions.

On his part the Sanitation Marshal at the Tamale Central Prisons, ASP Isaac Amoako, underscored the service’s readiness to help in the fight against sanitation related issues in the region using their men in desilting choked gutters and cleaning public spaces.
