Karpowership cushioned Ghana after Akosombo GRIDCO Fire – MD

Power producer Karpowership says its ability to operate at full capacity during the recent fire incident at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) Substation at Akosombo helped reduce the impact of the disruption on Ghana’s electricity supply.

According to the company, it maintained a consistent generation of 450 megawatts throughout the period, preventing what could have escalated into a more severe power crisis.

Speaking to Citi News on Wednesday, April 29, during a visit by the Sekondi Traditional Council to the power vessel, Managing Director Oscar Kojo Amonoo-Neizer said the company’s readiness to ramp up production played a key role in stabilising the grid.

He explained that Karpowership remained fully operational during the outage linked to the Akosombo system, supplying electricity in line with its agreement with the Electricity Company of Ghana.

“During the outage at Akosombo, we remained fully available throughout. We supplied power at 100 per cent in line with our contractual arrangement with ECG, contributing 450 megawatts to the national grid, and we have maintained that level since,” he said.

Mr Amonoo-Neizer added that the company’s response highlights its critical role in Ghana’s energy mix and strengthens arguments for extending its Power Purchase Agreement beyond 2027.
