GFA boss Kurt Okraku calls for policy reforms on alcohol sponsorship and VAT rates
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has urged government to introduce a regulatory framework that would allow responsible alcohol sponsorship in football, developed in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Speaking at the 31st Ordinary Congress in Pampram on Tuesday, GFA President Kurt Okraku said:
“The GFA urges the creation of a regulatory framework for responsible alcohol sponsorship in football, developed with the FDA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.”
His call comes after Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams indicated earlier this year that plans were underway to review the existing ban on alcohol sponsorship in sports.
Okraku also appealed for changes to the tax regime for football clubs, proposing that the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate be brought in line with the entertainment industry’s 3% flat rate.
“The GFA urges the government to align football clubs’ VAT rate with the entertainment industry’s 3% flat rate to boost profitability, support player development, enhance licensing compliance and improve competitiveness,” he said.
According to the GFA, both reforms would provide much-needed financial relief to clubs, strengthen their commercial viability, and help raise the standard of domestic football.
