African champions Al Ahly after a goalless draw in regulation time humbled Copa Libertadores winners Palmeiras 3-2 on penalties in the third place playoff at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.

Both teams squared off in the third place game after losing their respective semi final games against Bayern Munich and CONCAF champions CF Tigres who are set to take on each other in the final later on Thursday.
Hero of the day was Ahly captain and goalkeeper Mohammed El Shenawy who saved three penalties during the shootouts to propel Ahly to glory.
New signing Badr Banoun, Mohammed Hani and Nigerian national Junior Ajayi were Ahly’s three scorers in the shootout before El Shenawy denied the South American champions last kick which was squandered by former Juventus and Galatasaray midfielder Felipe Melo to win the game.
Today’s victory marks the Red Devil’s second in this years competition after edging out Qatari champions Al Duhail SC in their opening game.
Also, this is the second time the African champions are placing third in the FIFA Club World Cup after beating Mexican outfit Club America to claim the same position in the 2006 edition.
