World Cup 2026: Caleb Yirenkyi credits training ground work for Ghana’s winning goal against Panama
Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has revealed that the match-winning move which secured victory over Panama was the result of meticulous preparation on the training pitch.

The FC Nordsjaelland player struck late to hand the Black Stars a 1-0 win in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L opener at BMO Field in Toronto, ensuring a perfect start to Carlos Queiroz’s campaign.
In a tightly contested encounter, Ghana struggled to find rhythm against a well-organised Panamanian side, with clear chances proving rare throughout much of the game.
But persistence paid off in the closing stages when Yirenkyi finished off a rehearsed attacking pattern that the squad had repeatedly worked on in training ahead of the tournament.
Speaking after the match, the 18-year-old midfielder pointed to the team’s preparation as the foundation of the decisive moment.
“I think that’s why we are practising a lot. We started our preparation to get the ball to the middle. And then put it in the box,” Yirenkyi said.
“And then we get to run. And then the ball goes to the finish line. I think that’s what we’ve been doing,” the 18 year oid added.
The result gives Ghana an early boost in Group L and sets up key upcoming fixtures against England and Croatia.
The Black Stars face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their group-stage matches against Croatia on June 27, with confidence growing after a winning start that strengthens their push for a place in the knockout rounds.
