The Global Affairs Canada-funded project, Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE-North) is set to train 2000 young women across the Northern, Savannah, North-East, Upper West and Upper East Regions of Ghana by the close of 2024.

This announcement was made by the Principal of the Dabokpa Technical Institute, Madam Mariama Mahama during the Sagnarigu WEE-Group inauguration in Tamale.

The five-year project being implemented by Alinea Foundation in the Northern Region’s capital is aimed at empowering young women between the ages of 18 and 35 via personal development training and practical trades that will equip them into getting employed in industrial trades.

According to the Field Manager of WEE-North, Dr. Nancy Drost, the project which operates within the five regions of the North, has equipped 103 young women with basic skills in electrical installation, carpentry and woodwork, plumbing, bricklaying and tiling, welding and small engine repairing through a capacity competence-based training approach in the Sagnarigu Municipality.

However, she emphasised that the project has more to offer participants under the various WEE groups that will be formed.

Speaking at the inauguration, Madam Mariama clarified that the WEE-Groups inaugurated is an innovation that will assist members to learn how to work together.

She added that training women in the fields of industrial trade puts the country in a strong standing economical position and also contributes massively towards reducing and ending violence and marginalization against women in Northern societies.

She stated emphatically that, the project will allow women to overcome prevailing gender stereotypes and barriers since it employs strategies that engage men in the creation of change in gender relations in communities.

The Dabokpa principal urged members of the Sagnarigu WEE-Group to remain focused, determined and hard-working since this will facilitate their growth in industrial trade.

In an interview with Fiila News, Madam Mariama Mahama called on members of the WEE-Groups to be prepared to compete in the industrial trade with their male counterparts and also endeavor to enrol in technical institutions after completion of the program to get certification for the skills acquired.

“…..they are going to compete so they should get there with all their professional hard skills and soft skills to be able to out-compete those in position already,” She said.
