We won’t interfere in Obuasi SHTS sexual abuse case — NDC General Secretary

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, has assured the public that the party will not interfere in the ongoing investigations involving Zakaria Abdulai, the interdicted headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
Addressing journalists on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Fifi Kwetey emphasised that the party condemns acts of sexual abuse and rape, urging law enforcement agencies to carry out an independent and thorough investigation.
“We want to reassert that as a party, we do not endorse any such conduct and we want the law enforcement to do an independent job. We assure the world that this party will not in any way interfere,” he stated.
He added that neither the party nor the government intends to shield anyone found culpable.
“If he’s found guilty, he will pay the right price. If he’s not guilty, we’ll be happy for him. So we want the law enforcement to do its own job.”
Explaining why the NDC initially allowed Mr. Abdulai to maintain his standing or contest internal party elections before rescinding that stance on Tuesday morning, Kwetey revealed that the party was unaware of the extent of the evidence when it first met on Monday.
The decision however changed after the airing of investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni’s full documentary, “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow,” which uncovered severe allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse.
“The party unluckily did not have access to what you call Manasseh’s comprehensive disclosure as of Monday when we had a meeting. That’s, I think, Manasseh aired his video and his tapes the evening of that day. Let’s just say that soon after watching those Manasseh tapes comprehensively, it was clear that our earlier position needed to be changed,” he explained.
Fifi Kwetey also distanced the party from recent comments made by an NDC communications officer who attempted to defend the embattled headmaster. He described the officer’s statements as unacceptable and unrepresentative of the NDC’s principles.
“Any officer who misspoke clearly is not speaking on behalf of this party. Personal responsibility is his. I think he’s had the decency of apologizing, and we expect that apology will be loud,” Kwetey added, reiterating that the party holds zero tolerance for sexual misconduct.
The headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, was interdicted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) following allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse involving multiple female students.
