WAFCON 2026: Algeria cruise into quarter-finals with victory over Kenya
Algeria secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Monday after beating Kenya 2-0 to finish second in Group A behind hosts Morocco.
The North Africans laid the foundations for victory with two first-half goals and then produced a disciplined defensive display after the break to seal their place in the knockout stages.
Captain Marine Defeur opened the scoring with a superb free-kick before Lynda Bendris capitalised on a goalkeeping error to put Algeria firmly in control.

On the matchday, Algeria made the perfect start in the 14th minute when Defeur curled a brilliant long-range free-kick beyond Kenya goalkeeper Lilian Awuor to hand her side the lead.
The North Africans doubled their advantage just nine minutes later after Bendris pressed aggressively inside the penalty area. The forward dispossessed goalkeeper Elizabeth Ochaka before firing towards goal, with Awuor unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
Kenya attempted to respond and came close to reducing the deficit in the 26th minute when Martha Emedot unleashed a powerful effort from distance that drifted narrowly wide.
Despite putting up a good fight in the second half, Kenya could not find a way back into the game.
The win confirms Algeria’s place in the last eight after the North Africans finished second in Group A, one point behind hosts Morocco.
