WAFCON 2026: Morocco top Group A to reach quarter-finals despite frustrating draw against Senegal
Hosts Morocco secured top spot in Group A at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) despite being held to a goalless draw by Senegal in Rabat on Monday.
The Atlas Lionesses were denied a third consecutive victory after Senegal goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye saved two second-half penalties to ensure the points were shared.
Despite the frustration, Morocco finished the group stage unbeaten with seven points, one ahead of Algeria, who defeated Kenya 2-0 to claim second place and a spot in the quarter-finals.

On the matchday, Morocco dominated large periods of the contest and looked set to break the deadlock in the 69th minute when Yasmin Mrabet stepped up from the penalty spot.
However, Senegal goalkeeper Ndiaye guessed correctly to make the save.
After the penalty was ordered to be retaken, Mrabet was given a second opportunity to score, but Ndiaye once again came to Senegal’s rescue with another impressive stop.
The double save proved to be the defining moment of the match as Morocco were left frustrated in front of their home supporters.
Although they failed to secure maximum points, Jorge Vilda’s side completed the group stage without suffering defeat and extended their remarkable defensive record.
The draw ensured Morocco finished top of Group A with seven points, while Algeria advanced as runners-up after their victory over Kenya.
Senegal ended the group stage in third place with four points, while Kenya exited the tournament without a point.
Morocco will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, where they are set to face the runners-up from Group B, which includes Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Tanzania and South Africa.
