U20 AFCON 2025: Ghana coach Desmond Ofei confident ahead of Group C opener against DR Congo

Ghana’s U-20 national team, Desmond Sakyi Ofei, has voiced optimism ahead of the Black Satellites’ opening Group C clash against DR Congo at the ongoing TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Speaking at the pre-match briefing, Coach Ofei began by expressing gratitude to the host nation for stepping in to organize the tournament on short notice. “We are happy to be here in Egypt,” he remarked. “It’s important that we get off to a good start.”

Ghana, four-time champions at this level and winners of the 2021 edition, are aiming to reclaim continental glory and secure qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. But standing in their way is a formidable DR Congo side.

Ofei was candid in his assessment of Friday’s opponents, describing the Congolese team as “strong, aggressive, and direct.” Nonetheless, the Ghanaian tactician remains unfazed, insisting that every team in the tournament poses a threat. “Every team in this tournament is strong,” he said. “We have to show our identity and pedigree.”

He further emphasized the team’s preparedness and determination to make an early statement in the competition. “The boys are ready. We want to showcase our talent, but we also need to neutralize DR Congo to get the right result,” he added.

As the Black Satellites prepare to begin their campaign at the New Suez Stadium, Ofei highlighted the team’s disciplined approach and tournament mindset. “We are approaching this tournament game by game,” he said. “We’re going to push for a positive result in the first game and then look forward to the next.”

Ghana’s illustrious history at the U-20 level—most notably as the only African nation to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup—continues to inspire this new generation of players. With a strong mix of talent, ambition, and tactical clarity, the Black Satellites are poised to reignite their legacy on the continental stage.

Their journey begins Friday, May 2, with kick-off set for 18:00 GMT against DR Congo in what promises to be a thrilling Group C encounter.
