U20 AFCON 2025: Captain Ofori McCarthy rallies Black Satellites ahead of DR Congo clash
As Ghana prepares to kick off its campaign in the 2025 TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, captain Ofori McCarthy has expressed the squad’s readiness and determination to make a strong start against DR Congo in their Group C opener.

The tournament, which began on April 27 in Egypt, sees Ghana placed in one of the most competitive groups, with defending champions Senegal and the Central African Republic also vying for advancement. For the Black Satellites, the road to a potential fifth continental title begins with a crucial fixture against the Congolese.
Speaking to the media ahead of Friday’s clash, McCarthy conveyed a confident yet grounded message. “We expect a very competitive game, but we are ready,” he stated. “Our preparations have been good, and the team is highly motivated. This is a strong group, and our first game is crucial—we’re looking forward to it with great anticipation.”
The Ghanaian skipper acknowledged the quality of their opponents but emphasized the importance of mentality and approach. “We respect Congo, but we will give our best. It’s all about going into the game with the right mentality and how we approach the game,” he said.
Ghana, a four-time U-20 AFCON champion and 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup winner, brings a storied legacy into the tournament. That legacy, according to McCarthy, serves as inspiration for the current generation of players, who are determined to write their own chapter in the nation’s football history.
“Our goal is to qualify from the group stage and take it step by step from there,” McCarthy affirmed. “We know what this tournament means to Ghana and to us as young players. We are focused and ready to deliver.”
With kickoff set for 18:00 GMT at the New Suez Stadium, all eyes will be on the Black Satellites as they look to make an early statement in their pursuit of continental glory.
