Team MoMo Covert has emerged as the first-place winner of the Northern Ghana Zonal Hackathon organised by MobileMoney Fintech LTD under its MoMo Fintech Lab initiative, securing a place in the national competition scheduled for December 30 in Accra.

The team, represented by Lukman Seydou and Fatima Abubakare, expressed excitement over the achievement, attributing their success to thorough preparation, extensive research, consultations and careful analysis of data.
Speaking after the announcement of the winners, Lukman Seydou described the experience as memorable and said the team had worked diligently to develop and refine its solution.
He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete strongly at the National Demo Day, adding that they hoped to emerge victorious once again.
The Northern Ghana Zonal Hackathon brought together promising innovators to develop technology-driven solutions to practical challenges, with particular interest in agricultural technology and financial services.
Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech LTD, Shaibu Haruna, disclosed that the MoMo Fintech Lab had received 1,791 applications from innovators across Ghana’s 16 regions, with 20 teams progressing to the Northern Zone bootcamp in Tamale.
He said 249 applicants selected Tamale as their preferred innovation hub, reflecting growing interest in developing technology and financial solutions tailored to local needs.
The initiative seeks to identify promising innovators, equip them with practical skills and connect them to the resources, mentorship and partnerships required to develop sustainable and scalable fintech businesses.
Participants at the bootcamp received training in problem identification, user validation, business viability, pitch development and solution building.
Addressing the innovators, a representative of the programme stressed the importance of developing products that respond to real customer needs. Participants were encouraged to engage communities, test their assumptions and rely on evidence when designing and improving their solutions.
The representative also highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork, noting that successful fintech ventures require a combination of technical, marketing, regulatory and business expertise.
Agricultural technology emerged as a key area of interest, with organisers noting that innovators were keen to address challenges across the agricultural value chain, including those affecting farmers, processors, aggregators and traders.
The four strongest solutions from the Northern Zone are expected to advance to the national stage, joining finalists from Kumasi and Accra to make up the final 12 teams.
MobileMoney Fintech LTD said the initiative was designed to strengthen Ghana’s fintech ecosystem by supporting young entrepreneurs, creating employment opportunities and expanding access to useful financial services.
It also seeks to promote innovation beyond Accra by strengthening regional innovation communities and connecting emerging entrepreneurs to broader networks and opportunities.
Applicants who did not qualify for the bootcamp were encouraged to use the feedback received to improve their ideas, strengthen their teams and continue developing their solutions.
Mr Haruna expressed appreciation to the partners, mentors, judges and facilitators who supported the initiative, urging participants to focus on practical, customer-centred solutions capable of creating meaningful impact in Northern Ghana and beyond.
The hackathon forms part of broader efforts to nurture local talent and transform innovative ideas into sustainable businesses that can contribute to Ghana’s growing digital financial services sector.
