Savannah REGSEC gives charcoal producers, loggers 30-day ultimatum to cease operations

The Savannah Regional Security Council has given loggers and commercial producers of charcoal a 30-day ultimatum to vacate the region.

The Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril who chairs the Regional and District Security Councils (REGSEC) made the announcement at a press conference today, Tuesday, March 30, 2021.

Trees in the region that are part of the Savannah Ecological Zone are threatened by logging and commercial production of charcoal.

To stop the menace, Mr. Jibril said no charcoal or wood will be allowed out of the Savannah Region after 30 days.

“We are giving commercial charcoal vendors four weeks to pack their goods that are locked up outside the Savannah Region because in the next thirty days after this conference we will not allow any rosewood, nay wood whether it is for Savannah Region or you have conveyors. We are totally banning the cutting of any wood within the Savannah Region,” he stated.

Mr. Jibril also announced no charcoal or wood from other regions will be allowed passage through the Savannah Region.

“We are going to have security checkpoints at our borders. For instance, Upper West Region where there is a lot of charcoal burning taking place, the taskforce which is headed by the Regional Commander will fashion a way out to make sure that these people don’t even have access to our roads because we will not be able to differentiate which cargo is coming from Upper West or Upper East. So we will make sure that they take some decisions and work with other partners to stop this.”

The Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril earlier promised to stop logging and commercial production of charcoal within one month in an interview with the media minutes after taking over office on Monday, March 15, 2021.

He said the menace of logging and commercial production of charcoal will be tackled head-on and brought to a stop within a month
