Kenyans in the north ‘risk starvation’ over drought

The government in Kenya has warned that Kenyans living in three counties in the north risk starvation because of low rainfall that has led to drought.

Devolution Minister Eugene Wamalwa said the national government was working with the county governments to “support the affected families”.

The counties of Marsabit, Turkana and Mandera are now on “alarm stage” and domestic animals belonging to the pastoral communities there have died because of severe drought.

Those affected will receive support in the form of cash transfers and water provision.

The minister has urged all the other counties to adopt climate change laws to be able to fight such calamities.
