“I went into depression” – Emotional Asamoah Gyan shares personal struggles
Former Ghana star Asamoah Gyan has revealed he battled depression about a year ago, urging people to speak up and seek support during difficult moments in life.

An emotional Gyan made the revelation on Wednesday during his unveiling as an ambassador by the Ghana Football Association at the Pelican Hotel in Accra.
“About a year ago, I had problems which led to depression,” Gyan said during the ceremony.
“Everybody can go through this stuff.”
The event was organised to celebrate Gyan’s contribution to Ghana football and officially introduce him as one of the ambassadors supporting the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 international goals and is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest footballers.
The former striker represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups and famously scored the country’s first-ever World Cup goal against Czech Republic in 2006.
As part of his ambassadorial role, Gyan is expected to lead promotional activities, fan engagements and campaigns aimed at rallying support for the Black Stars ahead of the tournament in North America.
He will also represent the GFA at official functions and support the promotion of Ghana’s national teams and youth football development.
The ceremony attracted several football personalities, former players, corporate partners and members of the media.
