Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan honours former coach J.E.A Sarpong

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan paid a glowing tribute to the man who discovered his talent, coach J.E.A. Sarpong, at his unveiling as the ambassador for Ghana national teams and colts football.

As a product of juvenile football, Gyan was handed the mantle of spearheading the country’s most beloved sports in an ambassadorial role at a well-attended event in Accra on Wednesday.

Various dignitaries across the sporting and political divide were present at the momentous occasion, with coach Sarpong spotted among the attendees.

His presence sparked an emotional reunion with arguably Ghana’s greatest footballer, with the ex-forward taking time to acknowledge his former instructor.

The veteran coach met Gyan at Accra Academy, where he honed and shaped the forward’s talent.

Gyan presented a jersey to his former trainer and shared reminisce the good old days with coach Sarpong.

Meanwhile, Gyan also admonished other former teammates who attended the event, including Stephen Appiah, Prince Tagoe and Emmanuel Agyemang Badu.

Speaking on his newest role, Gyan said: “I am truly honoured by this recognition. I want to thank the President and the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association for believing in me and entrusting me with this responsibility. Ghana football has given me everything, and I will continue to serve this country with passion and dedication.”

Gyan remains an iconic figure in global football, and holds the record as Africa’s top scorer at the World Cup and Ghana’s record goal-scorer.
