Hero’s welcome for Omar Artan as Somali referee returns home after World Cup heartbreak
Somali referee Omar Artan has returned to Mogadishu to a hero’s welcome after being denied entry into the United States, a setback that will prevent him from making history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 34-year-old official had been selected among FIFA’s match officials for the tournament and was set to become the first Somali referee to take on an on-field role at football’s biggest event.
However, his dream was cut short when US immigration authorities refused him entry upon arrival in Miami despite him holding a diplomatic passport and a valid single-entry US visa.
Artan was travelling to attend FIFA’s pre-tournament referees’ seminar in Miami, a mandatory preparation camp for all officials selected for the World Cup.
Reports indicate that he was questioned for several hours by immigration officials before being placed on a return flight due to what authorities described as “vetting concerns.”
The decision sparked disappointment across Somalia, where Artan is regarded as one of the country’s greatest sporting success stories.
Despite the setback, hundreds of supporters and football stakeholders welcomed him back to Mogadishu, celebrating his achievements and the historic journey that took him to the brink of a World Cup appearance.
Artan became a FIFA referee in 2018 and has steadily risen through African football, making history as the first Somali to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2024.
He was later named CAF’s Best Male Referee and earned global recognition for his performances on the continent’s biggest stages.
Although his World Cup dream has been put on hold, Artan remains a symbol of pride and inspiration for Somalia, with many believing his story is far from over.
