Hearts and Kotoko handed contrasting starts to 2025/26 GPL season

Hearts of Oak will begin the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season at home against newly promoted Hohoe United at the Accra Sports Stadium, as the Phobians aim to launch a serious title charge following a mixed campaign last term.

Didi Dramani’s side, who secured a top-four finish with a late surge last season, are viewed as favourites against the inexperienced newcomers. However, with a restructured technical setup that now includes Aboubakar Ouattara as Special Advisor, Hearts are determined to avoid any early slip as they bid to reclaim the league crown.

Arch-rivals and record champions Asante Kotoko, meanwhile, face a tricky opening-day assignment away to Berekum Chelsea — a venue that has often proved difficult for them.

Kotoko head into the season buoyed by their President Cup and Toyota Cup successes and the permanent appointment of Karim Zito, whose mid-season arrival sparked a revival following the dismissal of Prosper Ogum. With continental football also on their agenda, the Porcupine Warriors are aiming for a flying start to their title push, though Chelsea, where Kotoko could only manage a draw last season, will prove stern hosts.

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League gets underway on the weekend of September 12, 2025.
