Frequent changes of coaches has affected Black Stars – Ex-GFA chief Ibrahim Sannie Daara

Since the start of Kurt Okraku’s tenure, the national team has gone through five head coaches. CK Akonnor succeeded Kwesi Appiah but was later replaced by Milovan Rajevac.

However, after a poor showing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, Rajevac was dismissed, and Otto Addo was appointed on an interim basis for the World Cup playoffs against Nigeria.

Addo led the Black Stars to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar but resigned after an early exit from the tournament.

Chris Hughton, who served as the team’s technical advisor, then took over as head coach, only to be let go following another group-stage elimination at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

In March this year, the Ghana Football Association reappointed Otto Addo with a 34-month contract.

Sannie Daara, formerly the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, believes these coaching shifts have undermined the team’s performance and stability.

“The Black Stars defeated Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup with a very young team, and if you look at the squad, we were very young so the momentum should have continued despite the elimination from the World Cup but we could not sustain the momentum,” he told Asempa FM.

“I believe the frequent changes of coaches have not helped the team and it has affected the confidence of this team.”

He urges patience as Addo works to build a resilient squad that can compete.

“The team now cannot perform well at tournaments and even play against minor sides. The technical team is now building a young team so we must exercise patience for this team,” he added.

The Black Stars, currently third in Group F with just two points from four games, will face Angola and Niger in their final AFCON 2025 qualifiers. They play Angola in Luanda on November 15, followed by a home game against Niger Republic three days later.
