62nd Independence Day activities outlined
The Communication Directorate at the Presidency has outlined the activities earmarked for the upcoming 62nd Independence Day celebration in the Northern regional capital, Tamale, between 28 February and 8 March 2019.
According to a member of the communication unit at the Office of the President, Mr Jefferson Sackey, the anniversary will begin with the observation of the Christiansborg Crossroads shooting incident and the Anniversary Debate on Thursday, 28 February 2019.
Thereafter, on Friday, 1 March 2019, the President’s Independence Day Awards for schoolchildren will be held concurrently with Muslim prayers across the country to thank Allah for the peace and unity of the country.
The event, he explained, is under the theme: “Celebrating for Peace and Unity.”
Mr Sackey added that a nationwide health and fitness walk will be held on Saturday, 2 March 2019 and later in the night, the Tamale Peace Concert will come off.
He further disclosed that Christian prayers and thanksgiving service; a ‘What Do You Know Quiz’ and ‘Rep the North’ (Northern Wear Day) event, together with a re-enactment of the activities that heralded the country’s independence, will follow on Sunday, 3 March 2019 and Tuesday, 5 March 2019.
The 62nd Independence Day parade will be held on Wednesday, 6 March 2019 at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale where various schools and security contingents will observe a march past.
The annual Open Day in all Garrisons will be held on 7 March 2019 and a boxing bout dubbed ‘Rumble at 62’ (Boxing Fiesta) will take place at the Bukom Boxing Arena to climax the annual celebrations on 7 March 2019.
