Vice President launches Mfantsipim’s 150th anniversary, calls for future-focused education reforms

The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has officially launched the 150th anniversary celebrations of Mfantsipim School, describing the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on the future of education in Ghana.
Speaking at the launch in Accra on Saturday April 11, 2026, the Vice President praised the school’s long-standing role in shaping national identity and producing leaders across various sectors.
She noted that institutions like Mfantsipim have been instrumental in developing human capital and strengthening the intellectual foundations of Ghana’s democracy and progress.
She stressed that the anniversary should not only celebrate longevity, but also prompt critical reflection on the structure, quality, relevance, and direction of education in the country.
According to her, there is a need to “preserve discipline and character” while expanding access to education without compromising excellence.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang further called for education systems to be aligned with an innovation-led economy, emphasizing the importance of “critical thinking, digital literacy, ethical values, and civic responsibility”.

She added that education must also foster innovation, resilience, and a strong commitment to nation-building among students.
The Vice President commended the school’s proposed STEM centre initiative, but underscored the need for a holistic approach that supports all academic disciplines.
She reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening secondary education nationwide through partnerships with faith-based institutions, alumni groups, and the private sector.
Addressing students, she described them as custodians of the school’s proud legacy, urging them to “uphold values of integrity, discipline, and service”.
She also acknowledged the continued support of alumni, noting that their investment ensures future generations benefit from the same transformative experience.

She congratulated the school on reaching the historic milestone and expressed optimism that the next 150 years would be even more impactful, before officially declaring the anniversary celebrations open.
