UN warns peace deal delay risks relapse into civil war

The UN is warning that South Sudan could spiral back into civil war because of delays in implementing the 2018 peace deal that brought nearly six years of conflict to an end.

UN commissioners visiting the country said key elements of the agreement were behind schedule, including putting in place a new constitution, planning elections, integrating rebels into the national army and setting up a court to try perpetrators of atrocities.

The UN team met government officials, displaced people and victims of sexual violence – some of whom said they had been attacked by government troops.

Tens of thousands of people were killed and millions were displaced in the civil war.
