The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, has said that the transformation of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is critical to restoring investor confidence, refining Ghana’s own crude oil locally, reducing the dependence on imported refined petroleum products, and advancing the President’s 24-Hour Economy and Reset Agenda through the revitalisation of strategic national assets.
He said this when he joined President John Dramani Mahama and other stakeholders on Sunday for the official commissioning of the refurbished Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) at the Tema Oil Refinery.
Dr Jinapor said the successful revival of TOR marks a significant milestone in our energy sector reset agenda.
He indicated that when the NDC administration assumed office, this strategic national asset had been placed under a private operating arrangement that did not deliver the intended outcomes, leaving the refinery’s core operations largely dormant.
“Today, we have restored TOR to its rightful place as a key pillar of Ghana’s energy security and industrial transformation,” he wrote on Facebook after the exercise on Sunday, July 2.
He commended the Managing Director, Edmond Kombat, the Board, management, and the workforce of TOR for their commitment, resilience, and hard work in bringing the refinery back into operation and translating the President’s vision into tangible results.
In accordance with the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, he said he has prepared and will present the comprehensive roadmap for expanding TOR’s refining capacity to 100,000 barrels per day.
“This will enable us to refine more of Ghana’s crude oil locally, meet a greater share of domestic demand, create jobs, add value to our natural resources, and strengthen Ghana’s position as a petroleum hub for the sub-region,” he said.
Dr Jinapor also encouraged the staff to sustain the momentum, uphold the highest standards of operational excellence and safety, and continue working together to secure the long-term success of the refinery.
“I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to supporting management and staff as we work together to build a stronger, more resilient, and self-reliant energy sector for Ghana,” he said.
