Techiman South NPP group calls for early congress
A concerned New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth group based in Techiman, in the Bono East Region, has called on the party’s leadership to consider holding an early congress.
The group said this will enable the party to have ample time to settle all post-congress grievances and misunderstandings, and also give whoever becomes flagbearer enough time to campaign and have himself marketed nationwide by the campaign team.
According to the NPP youth group, the stature of the personalities who have hinted that they might compete for the various executive positions in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming congress is an indication of a fierce upcoming contest.
The spokesperson for the group, James Kwadwo Owusu, in a Citi News interview on Monday, April 19, 2021, stated that “the group foresees a fierce contest that is likely to breed factions and animosity after the congress, hence the call for an early congress so the party has ample time to deal with them.”
James Kwadwo Owusu further stated that should the party leadership hold an early congress, it will give the party enough time to deal with any issues that might arise and potentially threaten the party’s chances in the 2024 general elections.
The NPP youth group has issued copies of their petition to the National Council and the National Executive Committee of the NPP, as well the President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo.

Choosing a flagbearer in the New Patriotic party in terms of human resource has never been the party’s headache, because, it has a pool of countless talents to choose from, but patching up possible cracks that will cripple the party after the congress ahead, is our worry and biggest concern as youth of the NPP in Techiman south constituency.
We have taken notice of the highly competitive flagbearer race and National Executive elections ahead of the NPP, coupled with entrenched positions and utterances thereon, which in our view, is a disguised enemy that will bedevil the NPP going into 2024, hence the urgent call on the National Council, National Executive Committee and his Excellency the president, to consider our call for early congress, so that, the party can have ample time to settle all post-congress grievances and misunderstandings that will spring up, and also afford the emerging flagbearer enough time to campaign and have himself marketed by the campaign team nationwide.
The stature of the personalities who have hinted to compete for various positions in the New Patriotic Party in the upcoming congress is an early signal for a tougher and fierce contest ahead, however, to put the party on a safer side devoid of groups and factions, UNITY is the key to break the “8” and dwarf the NDC to the bench for the third time in a row, with unmatchable achievements from the Nana Addo-Bawumia second term administration for our fullest preparedness in 2024, if early congress is considered.
The constitution allows an early congress; eleven (11) months when the party is in power ahead of elections and two (2) years when in opposition. In this case, an early congress is ideal since the elected presidential candidate will have ample time and space to prepare the party sufficiently for victory in the next general elections.
However, we also admit that the NPP cannot have two (2) leaders of the party within that spate of time of the newly elected leader and the sitting president, but we believe that, National Council can settle that without any difficulty since his Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo cannot contest again. NPP must break the “8”!!!
