Tamale Technical University students protest over ‘mismanagement’ of school’s funds

Scores of students of Tamale Technical University on Tuesday, September 16, protested against the management of the school over what they described as neglect, misappropriation, mismanagement of funds, and unjustified fee increments.

The students blocked all entry points to the school and burnt lorry tyres at the administration block to register their displeasure.

They later clashed with police who were deployed to restore calm on campus. Some students sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Musa Mahamudu, Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of Tamale Technical University, explained in an interview with the media that the demonstration was to demand better welfare for students and development of the university.

“Our main aim for this demonstration is the issue we have with management, which has to do with pressing matters that affect students in this university.

“Let’s talk about hostels, lecture halls, campus comfort, etc. Over the years, we have been paying school fees and levies for development, which are supposed to improve this university,” he stated.

The students also petitioned the Education Minister to address their grievances.

“We are compelled to bring to your urgent attention issues of systematic neglect of student welfare, alleged misapplication of funds, and the proposed increment of fees without justification.

“These actions, in our view, contravene the principles of equity, accountability, and quality education enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana,” portions of the petition read.

They further noted that the school’s infrastructure remains in a deplorable state despite the payment of levies and fees. They called on management to ensure the judicious use of monies paid by students.
