Sports Ministry refutes claims Kofi Adams told Black Queens to leave camp
Wonder Mandel, the special assistant to Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, has refuted reports suggesting that the Minister told the Black Queens they could leave camp if they refused to play against Egypt over unpaid bonuses.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Mandel clarified that during a meeting with the players on Sunday, which was also attended by Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, the Minister did not make such remarks.
“The Minister met the players on Sunday with the GFA President, Kurt Okraku, and had a meeting with the team’s leadership. The Minister never told the players, ‘If you won’t play, you can go home.’ He would never say that, and he didn’t say that,” Mandel stated.
He explained that the Minister assured the players he was working to resolve the issue, adding that the bonuses were being pursued through the Presidency and the Ministry of Finance.
According to Mandel, Kofi Adams promised the players they would be paid as soon as the funds were released, but the players remained firm, insisting they would not play until their bonuses were settled.
The Black Queens are owed $9,500 each from their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco. They are scheduled to face Egypt in the second leg of the 2026 WAFCON qualifier on Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
