Sports Minister Kofi Adams hails Black Queens’ heroic effort at WAFCON
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has praised the Black Queens for their brave and inspiring performance in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, 23rd July 2025, the Minister, speaking on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the Ministry, commended the team for pushing the host nation to the limit during 120 minutes of high-intensity football, eventually falling short in a penalty shootout.
“Taking the hosts through 120 minutes of spirited football and contesting the result on penalties reflects both your determination and your commitment to the national cause,” he said.
Though the result did not go Ghana’s way, the Minister said the team had achieved something far more significant – restoring pride and reaffirming Ghana’s place in women’s football.
The Black Queens lost 4-2 after post-match penalty shootouts after holding Morocco to a 1-1 stalemate after extra-time at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday.
“You have reminded the continent that Ghanaian women’s football is a force to reckon with. Ghana is proud of what you have achieved; You have shown that our women’s football is once again competing at the highest level,” he stated.
Looking ahead to the third-place match against South Africa on Friday, Hon. Adams encouraged the team to carry forward their belief and unity, assuring them of the unwavering support of the nation.
“This campaign marks the beginning of a new chapter and we look forward to the successes that lie ahead,” he said.
The Minister also extended his appreciation to fans who travelled to support the team:
“Travelling at personal cost and standing firm in a challenging atmosphere, you created a pocket of Ghanaian energy in the stands and carried the team to the final whistle. Your commitment did not go unnoticed.”
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s support to the team for the rest of the tournament and beyond, pledging to ensure that all necessary needs are met.
“Let us build on the positives and complete the tournament with purpose,” he said.
In closing, he delivered a rousing message: “You have earned our respect. Now, let us finish on a high note.”
