Soufiane Rahimi breaks Al Ain scoring record to overtake Asamoah Gyan
Morocco forward Soufiane Rahimi has become Al Ain's all-time leading scorer in the AFC Champions League after surpassing club legends Omar Abdulrahman and Ghana's Asamoah Gyan.
Rahimi scored in Al Ain’s 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in their opening AFC Champions League Elite league-stage match on Tuesday.
The goal took the 29-year-old’s tally to 19 goals in Asian club competitions for Al Ain, moving him clear of Abdulrahman and Gyan, who each scored 18.
Rahimi had entered the match level with the pair before his strike secured sole ownership of the club’s continental scoring record.
The Moroccan international has established himself as one of Al Ain’s most influential players in recent seasons, playing a key role in the club’s success in Asian competition.
With Abdulrahman no longer at the club and Gyan’s playing career over, Rahimi has the opportunity to extend his lead as Al Ain continue their AFC Champions League campaign.
