School Soccer: Presby SHS Begoro and Manya Krobo (Girls) dominate Eastern Region

Presbyterian Senior High School, Begoro (Begoro PRESEC), made history on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, by clinching their first-ever Eastern Region Schools & Colleges Boys’ Soccer Championship title after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Manya Krobo Senior High School (MAKROSEC).

The final, played at the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre, ended goalless in regulation time, forcing the showdown to be settled from the spot. PRESEC held their nerve to emerge champions in what was a tense and thrilling conclusion.

Key to their impressive run was the contribution of six standout players-four in Form 3 and two in Form 2-who also feature for Begoro-based lower division side Bawa FC. Their quality helped the team’s chemistry throughout the competition.

Begoro PRESEC dominated Group B, securing wins against Nifa SHS, Apedwa PRESEC (3-2 on penalties), and Mpraeso SHS (5-4 on penalties).

They edged past New Juaben SHS 1-0 on penalties in the quarter-finals following another goalless draw and booked their spot in the final with a 2-0 shootout victory over Adeiso PRESEC in the semis.

It is a historic milestone for PRESEC Begoro, who have now firmly etched their name among the region’s top school soccer sides.

”I have lost my voice. I won’t deceive you. When we got to our school, we couldn’t even enter. As I am talking to you, they have declared today (Friday day) as a holiday and my headmaster is organizing a party for the players who have conquered Eastern Region,’’ coach and Head of PE Department Isaac Okumah told Elite Schools League.

”At the moment I am just looking for sponsorship for most of the players and see whether we can get teams because about 4 or 5 are third years.’’

In the Girls’ division, MAKROSEC were crowned champions-for the first time in competition history- after brushing aside Oda-based Salvation Army Senior High School 3-0.

They were bolstered by the three national team players- Belinda Kpentey, Christiana Ashiaku and Blessing Tettey- who won gold for Ghana at the recently held 2025 CAF African Schools Championship in Accra.

Overall, it was a good outing for the Lower Manya Municipality institution who had their boys’ team win silver.

”We are very grateful that we came for the competition with the hopes of lifting trophies-more than two but at the end we had two and we have one silver and we are grateful,’’ PE Teacher Desmond Dzodzordzi told Elite Schools League.

”It has boosted the morale of the students to continue to train and participate in other sports competitions.’’

The competition, organized by the Eastern Region Second Cycle School Sports Association under the Ghana Education Service, had winners and runners from the eight zones in the regions.
