Samartex defender Isaac Afful happy with maiden Ghana call-up

Samartex defender Isaac Afful has expressed his delight after receiving his first invite into the senior national soccer team, the Black Stars.

The enterprising left-back earned a spot in Otto Addo’s 25-man squad for the crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification doubleheader against Sudan.

He is one of the two Ghana Premier League players to have been included in the squad for the upcoming games.

Afful, who is a left-back will compete with experienced Gideon Mensah for a starting role ahead of the Sudan showdown.

“It is the motive of every player to play for his national team. I was happy to be named in the Black Stars squad. I won’t be swollen headed after earning my first call up. I will work hard to justify my call up” he said.

Afful has been outstanding for the Timber Giants since joining the club from Division One League club, Skyy FC. He was instrumental when Samartex annex the Ghana Premier League title for the first time in history.

The 25-year-old made an outstanding debut appearance with Samartex in the CAF Champions League preliminary round, scoring a crucial goal to secure a 1-0 away win over Victoria United as the Ghanaian champions progressed with a 2-0 aggregate win.

The four-time champions of the AFCON title are without a win in their opening games in Group F, losing to Angola and drawing against Niger in September.

Otto Addo’s side aim to secure one of the top two spots in Group F to qualify for the AFCON tournament, scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026 in Morocco.
