As the 2024 general elections draw closer, Father Thaddeus Kuusah, the Regional Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council (NPC) for the Northern Region, has called on the youth to adopt a mindset of peace and cooperation. Speaking at the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) Regional Youth Dialogue and Festival for Peace in Tamale, Father Kuusah emphasized the critical role of young people in maintaining peace before, during, and after the elections.
Father Kuusah highlighted the importance of bringing together young supporters from various political parties, stressing that their involvement in peaceful practices could greatly influence the overall electoral process.
“The youth form a very vital part of our society, especially because of their vibrancy and energy,” he stated. “This training provides them with a fresh perspective on how to promote a peaceful election, from campaign activities to election day itself, and even after the results are announced.”
Mr. Kwaku Krobea Asante, Senior Programs Officer for Institutional Development at MFWA, explained that the foundation organized the event to encourage young people to recognize their role in peacebuilding. He pointed to the importance of fighting misinformation, propaganda, and polarized narratives that often arise during election periods.
“With just a month and a few days left before the election, it is extremely important to underscore the youth’s role in fostering peace and stability,” Asante said. “They are the strength of political parties, responsible for much of the groundwork, so it’s crucial they understand the significance of their actions.”
Both Father Kuusah and Mr. Asante urged young people to resist engaging in conflict, instead promoting peace as a foundation for credible and stable elections.
