Education Ministry mourns Nkwanta SHS students killed in renewed tribal violence

The Ministry of Education has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives at Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region, following renewed tribal violence in the area.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry confirmed that two female day students were killed in a shooting incident on Thursday, June 26. A male student also lost his life after being hit by a stray bullet on Friday, June 27.

All three deaths occurred within the school premises, which were caught in the crossfire of escalating communal tensions in Nkwanta.

“The Ministry commiserates with all students, their families, staff of Nkwanta SHS, and everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence within the community,” the statement read.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu extended condolences to the bereaved families and commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Acting Regional Director of Education in the Oti Region for their swift intervention to safeguard lives.

Measures taken included the temporary closure of Nkwanta SHS and the deployment of police escorts to ensure students’ safe return to their homes.

The Minister further directed the GES to continue monitoring the situation closely and to take all necessary actions to protect students, staff, and school infrastructure.

“We look forward to a rapid and peaceful resolution to the conflict to enable students to return to a safe learning environment,” the Ministry stated.

The incident has heightened concerns over the vulnerability of educational institutions in conflict-prone areas, with renewed calls for urgent and lasting peace in the region.
