The Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) has announced plans to withdraw its vehicles from the roads indefinitely from September 21, 2026, over what it describes as mounting operational challenges, particularly the rising cost of vehicle maintenance.
The association says its members will park their vehicles until the government addresses their concerns, which include sharp increases in the prices of vehicle spare parts and maintenance services.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One Newsroom, PROTOA Public Relations Officer, Samuel Adu-Yeboah, said the association had already informed both the government and the public about the planned industrial action.
He explained that escalating costs of spare parts had placed commercial transport operators under increasing financial strain.
Mr Adu-Yeboah attributed the rising cost of vehicle components to port charges, taxes and other expenses associated with importing spare parts into Ghana.
Despite the planned strike, he said PROTOA was prepared to engage the government and find a resolution before the deadline.
“If transport ministry is ready to meet up, to go on a negotiation table, we are good to go,” he said.
Mr Adu-Yeboah said the association had earlier issued a public notice on September 9 to highlight the difficulties confronting drivers and transport owners.
However, he said the concerns raised had yet to receive the attention the association expected, leaving members with the option of withdrawing their vehicles from service.
