Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama is MP-elect for Tamale Central Constituency

The Electoral Commission has declared Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama as the Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency in accordance with CI 127.

Professor Alidu Seidu went unopposed after the close of nominations by the Electoral Commission on Sunday September 21 after a ten-day extension.

The Tamale Central Constituency seat became vacant, following the unfortunate demise of the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Constituency, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday August 6.

The NDC opened nominations for party members to contest in a parliamentary primary. Professor Alidu Seidu was among eleven other aspirants who contested the NDC parliamentary primary.

He subsequently won the parliamentary primary after polling 840 votes and was subsequently declared as the party’s parliamentary candidate.

Professor Alidu Seidu filed nominations after the Electoral Commission opened nominations. The Electoral Commission, extended the deadline for picking and filing nominations after two individuals who earlier picked nominations to contest the by-election later pulled out

On Sunday September 21, the extended deadline by the Electoral Commission for filing nominations ended with no one picking nominations form to contest Professor Alidu Seidu.

On Tuesday September 23, and in accordance with CI 127, the Commission declared Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama as Member of Parliament-elect.

“As it stands, only Professor Alidu Seidu stands nominated since no one filed. In view of this, I, Muniru Musah, returning officer for the Tamale Central Constituency and in working with CI 127, declare Prof Alidu Seidu Mahama as the MP-elect for Tamale Central Constituency,“ the EC officials declared.
