NPP distances itself from death threats against Mahama

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned and distanced itself from death threats targeted at President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, assuring that such conduct does not reflect the party’s values.
General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Koduah, made the remarks during a visit to the national headquarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), where he met with the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah and other executives on Wednesday, August 13.
“Indeed, there are certain comments that are made by foot soldiers or even people who are not close to the party. But when such unfortunate, condemnable statements are made, it is important for the leadership to distance ourselves and make it clear that this is not the character of our party,” Koduah said.
He acknowledged that inflammatory remarks have been made by individuals linked to both the NDC and NPP, but stressed that wishing death on anyone, let alone a political opponent, undermines democratic values.
“Some are claiming that the NPP is behind it, and some are even saying they expected other people to die. These things are not healthy for our democracy. Death is something that shouldn’t be wished for your worst enemy.
“So, if anything came from our side, on behalf of the party, we apologise to the NDC through you to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is not the position of the New Patriotic Party, and we never condone such activity,” he emphasised.
The comments follow the Ghana Police Service’s investigation into a viral TikTok video in which an individual is heard issuing threats against President Mahama and the First Lady.
Police confirmed that the video, widely circulated on social media, contains statements deemed to be threats to the lives of the President and his spouse.
So far, two suspects, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, have been arrested and are in police custody, assisting with investigations. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons connected to the recording and distribution of the video.
Meanwhile, an Accra Circuit has granted Prince Ofori 100,000GHS bail with three sureties to be fulfilled by two gainfully employed persons. The suspect is also required to submit his passport to the police until the court determines otherwise, and reappear before the court on August 25, 2025.
