No Hearts, Kotoko as Dreams FC lead Ghanaian clubs in latest CAF rankings

Dreams FC’s rise on the continental stage represents a major achievement for the club, which has quickly established itself as one of Ghana’s most competitive sides beyond the domestic league. Their historic run in the Confederation Cup, where they competed against some of Africa’s established clubs, earned them valuable points and enhanced Ghana’s reputation in continental football.

The club’s impressive showing has now placed them ahead of the two most glamourous clubs in Ghana, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, who are notably absent from the latest CAF rankings.

Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, two of Ghana’s most decorated clubs with rich histories in African football, have struggled in recent years to maintain consistent performances in CAF competitions. Their absence from the ranking list highlights the challenges facing the country’s biggest football brands on the continental stage.

Asante Kotoko remain Ghana’s most successful club historically in CAF competitions, having won the CAF Champions League twice, while Hearts of Oak famously lifted the same trophy in 2000. However, recent struggles in domestic competitions and limited success in Africa have affected their current standing among the continent’s top clubs.

Meanwhile, Medeama SC are the other Ghanaian club featured in the rankings, occupying the 54th position. The Tarkwa-based side earned recognition through their participation in CAF competitions and continued representation of Ghana at the highest level.

The latest rankings underline the changing landscape of Ghanaian club football, with emerging teams such as Dreams FC making significant progress while established giants work to regain their former dominance.

Across Africa, South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns sit at the top of the rankings with 73 points, replacing Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who have dropped to second place with 66 points. Tunisia’s Espérance Sportive de Tunis, Morocco’s RS Berkane and Algeria’s USM Alger complete the top five.

For Ghana, Dreams FC’s position provides a positive sign as clubs continue efforts to compete with Africa’s leading teams. Their achievement also serves as motivation for other Ghanaian sides to invest in squad development, infrastructure and consistent participation in CAF competitions.

With Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko missing from the latest rankings, the responsibility of flying Ghana’s flag on the continental ranking table currently rests on the shoulders of Dreams FC and Medeama SC.
