Medeama, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa present trophies to Mahama at Jubilee House
Medeama, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies presented their trophies to President John Mahama during a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House on Tuesday.
The three clubs were invited to the seat of government following their success in Ghanaian football last season and their qualification to represent the country in continental competitions.
Medeama presented the Ghana Premier League trophy after being crowned champions, while Nations FC presented the MTN FA Cup trophy following their historic triumph in the domestic cup competition.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies, meanwhile, presented the Women’s Premier League trophy after winning the women’s top-flight title and subsequently representing Ghana in the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers, where they reached the final.
The visit provided an opportunity for the clubs to engage with President Mahama and discuss the state of Ghanaian club football and the challenges facing teams competing on the continent.
Mahama acknowledged the achievements of the three clubs and praised the individuals who continue to invest their own resources into Ghanaian football.
“Our fortunes at the club level have dwindled and we need to find out why our club level soccer is not as strong as it used to be. We should be able to build more giants and winners on the continent,” Mahama said.
He assured the clubs of government support through the newly established Sports Development Fund, while also calling for increased investment from the private sector.
“I can assure you that help is at hand. We’ve set up the sports development fund and government will commit some money to it. But we’re also looking to the private sector to put in additional money,” he added.
As part of the government’s support, Medeama received $30,000, Nations FC were presented with $20,000, while Ampem Darkoa Ladies received $10,000.
The financial support is intended to assist the clubs in their domestic and continental campaigns.
Medeama are representing Ghana in the CAF Champions League, while Nations FC are competing in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies are also seeking to build on their domestic success after reaching the final of the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
The Jubilee House visit brought together the three domestic champions as Ghana looks to strengthen its presence in African club football.
