Maxwell Konadu vows to restore Black Satellites to former glory after early WAFU exit
Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu has pledged to restore Ghana's U-20 national team to its traditional place among Africa's elite following the team's group-stage exit at the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship.
The Black Satellites failed to progress beyond the group stage after collecting two points from three matches in Cote d’Ivoire, but Konadu says the setback will only strengthen the 2009 World champions’ resolve ahead of next year’s TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana will host.
“This is not going to demotivate us. Rather, it will encourage us to give our best. We have to move on, reorganise ourselves and come back stronger,” he said.
Konadu acknowledged the expectations that come with coaching one of Africa’s most successful youth national teams.
“This team has enjoyed so much success over the years, so any tournament without the trophy is never acceptable to Ghanaians. That is not what we came here for. The Black Satellites have set very high standards over the years, and that is where we want to take the team back to.”
The coach believes the WAFU B Championship has provided valuable lessons as Ghana begins preparations for the 2027 continental championship on home soil.
