Joseph Paintsil and LA Galaxy trio break 16-year record for most goal contributions by a quartet
Ghana forward Joseph Paintsil is part of the most prolific quartet in the history of Major League Soccer.
The Black Stars forward, who joined Los Angeles Galaxy in February, formed a formidable quartet with ex-Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig, Gabriel Pec and Dejan Joveljic to lead the LA club to MLS triumph.
The three Ps (Pec, Puig and Paintsil), as they are affectionately known, and Joveljic contributed 124 goals in the regular and post-season to break a 16-year record held by another quartet from LA Galaxy.
Paintsil scored 14 goals and delivered 11 assists to add to Puig’s 35 G/A, same as Pec, and Joveljic’s 29.
In 1998, the quartet of Welton, Cobi Jones, Mauricio Cienfuegos and Martin Machon racked up 122 goals and assists contribution.
Painstil’s outstanding performances endeared him to the fans in LA as the MLS giants added another star to their badge. The Ghanaian winger scored the opener in the 2-1 victory over New York Red Bulls in the MLS Cup final to end a ten-year wait for the title.
The 27-year-old moved to the United States after a stellar career in Belgium with KRC Genk, where he won the league title in 2018.
“I feel really blessed. It goes also with my song, so it’s really amazing and a good feeling now,” Paintsil told MLS Soccer after the game.
“It’s really special because 10 years is a really big gap, and we succeeding and winning the Cup now, we are not going to talk about the 10 years now. Now we start from this year, so it’s just amazing and we keep going,” he added.
