I did not deserve 2021 AFCON qualifier call-up – Baba Rahman

Ghana international Baba Rahman has opened up on why he initially rejected a call-up for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Sudan.

The former Asante Kotoko defender who spent a chunk of the season on the injury bed at Chelsea was included in Black Stars squad by the then head coach, CK Akonnor.

The decision by the technical handlers was criticised, with many questioning the fitness of the left-back.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Rahman admitted he initially turned down the invitation.

“I honestly didn’t feel I deserved the call-up at the time, so I initially rejected it,” he said.

“But the GFA and Coach CK Akonnor explained that they were short on left-backs and needed someone with my experience. That’s why I eventually accepted.”

Despite the public uproar, Akonnor stood by his decision, emphasising the need for experience in the squad.

He was, however, relieved of his duties months later following a poor start to Ghana’s 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.
