Hans Adu Sarpei confident Black Stars will improve before start of 2026 World Cup

Former Black Stars defender Hans Adu Sarpei believes Ghana can still sharpen their game ahead of the 2026 World Cup despite recent setbacks.

The senior national team, preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, endured a 5-1 defeat against Austria followed by a 2-1 loss to Germany in international friendlies.

Sarpei admitted frustration at conceding a late goal against Germany but praised the team’s response after the heavy loss to Austria.

“Germany are a very good team, so losing 2–1 is not necessarily a bad result. However, when you are level going into the final minute, you need to fight to at least secure that one point,” he told Joy Sports.

“After the 5–1 defeat to Austria, the response we showed against Germany was encouraging. We played much better, but there is still room for improvement,” Sarpei added.

The back-to-back defeats led to the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo, leaving the Black Stars without a manager just 70 days before the tournament.

GFA President Kurt Okraku has confirmed that a new head coach is expected to be appointed within the next two weeks.
