GSS trains media personnel on the 2021 population and housing census

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has organized a day’s sensitization workshop for media practitioners from six regions in Tamale.

The training is aimed at equipping media persons with the requisite knowledge on statistical reporting and also sensitizes the media houses on the upcoming population and housing census (PHC).

The 2020 Population and Housing Census which should have been conducted last year by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) which has been consistent with a ten-year tradition, was postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his opening remarks the Government Statistician Professor Samuel Kwabena Anim indicated that plans are far advanced to conduct the census this year with a strict adherence to the covid-19 protocols.

He indicated that the initial budget for the PHC before Covid which was 477 million Cedis has been revised upwards to 521 million Cedis post Covid .

This according to the Government Statistician is to enable the service carry out its mandate of capturing and obtaining a complete count of structures, households and persons within the borders of Ghana.

On his part the Head of Census Methodology at the Ghana Statistical Service(GSS), Mr. Owusu Kagya explicitly stated that census information will be made confidential and used only for statistical purposes hence citizens should feel free to share their information to their field officers who will be visiting them to take this data.

He added that Training and data collection will be conducted in strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols as we are not in normal times.

Meanwhile in order to meet one of the essential requirements for a modern census, all census questions are asked in reference to a date, designated as the CENSUS NIGHT.
