GFA to decide Carlos Queiroz’s future after reviewing World Cup technical report

Queiroz, 73, was appointed on a short-term contract to lead Ghana just weeks before the tournament in North America, replacing Otto Addo.

Despite the limited preparation time, the experienced Portuguese tactician guided the Black Stars to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals in 2010.

However, uncertainty has surrounded his future since Ghana’s elimination from the tournament. While some supporters have called for a change in leadership, President John Dramani Mahama has publicly urged the GFA to retain the former Real Madrid manager.

A final decision, though, will rest with the GFA’s Executive Council after assessing Queiroz’s technical report.

Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo confirmed that the review process will determine whether the former Iran, Egypt and Colombia coach remains in charge of the national team.

“Carlos Queiroz’s future will be decided after the GFA reviews his reports,” Sarfo said during an interview with Asempa FM.

The GFA Executive Council is expected to convene on Friday, July 31, where Queiroz’s report will be one of the key agenda items.

Ghana began their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama before earning a goalless draw against England. A 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match saw the Black Stars progress to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Their journey ended in the knockout phase after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

With the World Cup campaign now concluded, attention shifts to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which get underway in September.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C alongside Gambia, Ivory Coast and Somalia as they seek to secure a return to Africa’s biggest football tournament after failing to qualify for the previous edition.
