GFA and Sports Ministry expected to appoint permanent Black Stars coach by November

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expects to appoint a substantive head coach for the Black Stars by November 2026 following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the committee tasked with finding a new coach is working towards completing the process before the end of the month.

Kim Lars Björkegren, who coaches Ghana’s women’s senior national team, the Black Queens, has been appointed on an interim basis to lead the Black Stars in their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia.

Björkegren will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while Fatawu Dauda retains his role as goalkeepers’ coach.

The temporary technical team was recommended by a five-member committee as the GFA works to find a permanent replacement for Queiroz.

Speaking to Luv FM, Asante Twum said the committee was aiming to conclude the recruitment process by November.

“They [the committee] want to get us a coach by November. In terms of actuals, I don’t have [a specific date], but I know by the end of the two games against Somalia, they will be in a position to tell who our coach is,” he said.

However, Asante Twum stressed that the immediate priority was to revive Ghana’s faltering AFCON qualifying campaign rather than focus on the coaching appointment.

“The two games ahead of us are more important than any other subject. We need to get back on track and must get results in the next matches,” he added.

The Black Stars are bottom of Group C without a point after losing their opening two matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.

Ghana will hope to revive their campaign with victories over Somalia in the upcoming double-header, with both fixtures expected to be played on home soil.

The four-time African champions are seeking to return to the AFCON after missing the 2025 edition in Morocco, having finished bottom of their qualifying group without a win.
