Govt to begin construction of three more regional hospitals in 2027 – Akandoh

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh says the government will begin work on three additional regional hospitals in 2027 as part of plans to complete all six hospitals needed to serve Ghana’s 16 regions.
He said contractors are already working on three of the six hospitals, while the remaining facilities are expected to be added next year.
Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, October 19, Mr Akandoh said the government was committed to expanding healthcare infrastructure across the country.
“As I speak to you now, out of the six regions, we have contractors on site at three of them. Next year, we’re going to add the next three. It means that we’ll build all six regional hospitals,” he said.
He identified the Oti, Western North and Savannah regions as areas where construction had begun, with the remaining facilities expected in the next phase.
Mr Akandoh also announced several other healthcare infrastructure projects, including a mother and child health centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as part of its redevelopment.
He said the facility would have a capacity of about 400 beds.
The minister further disclosed that the government was undertaking specialised hospital projects in Besease and Bole, as well as district hospital projects at Shama, Akatsi and Bawku.
On cardiology services, he said a new catheterisation laboratory at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama, was operational.
He added that cardiology centres at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital were between 70 and 80 per cent complete.
Mr Akandoh said the government planned to construct additional cardiology centres at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital and the Ho Teaching Hospital next year.
On the La General Hospital project, Mr Akandoh said contractors were also on site and construction was progressing steadily.
