GBC disputes Sports Minister’s claim on $3m African Games payment
A significant discrepancy has emerged between the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and the Sports Ministry over the amount paid for the coverage of the 2023 African Games.
Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif claimed that the government paid GBC over $3 million for its role as the official broadcaster of the Games.
“Yes, GBC was the official broadcaster for the 13th All African Games, and I can confirm that full payment has been made to GBC. I can’t remember the exact amount but I know that it is in the excess of $3 million,” Ussif said.
However, GBC Director-General Prof. Amin Alhassan has vehemently denied this, stating that the broadcaster only received a total of $105,000 for the coverage.
“I want to state that GBC’s total benefit from the African Games was $105,000. Nothing more was paid to GBC,” Prof. Alhassan said on Uniq FM.
The disparity in figures has sparked public debate and questions about the management of public funds.
The GBC has clarified that the received amount was used to offset costs incurred due to the suspension of regular programming to accommodate the Games’ coverage.
This incident highlights a potential miscommunication or error in financial reporting and raises concerns about transparency in government spending.
